Holy Thursday - Liturgy of the Lord's Supper

We enter the Holy Easter Triduum. We gather around Christ, who invites us to a common supper to wash our feet and feed us with His Body and Blood. Today we also remember the institution of two sacraments - the Eucharist and the priesthood

The celebration of the Easter Triduum began in the Lichen basilica with the Mass of the Lord's Supper. The liturgy was presided over by Fr. Bogusław Binda, MIC, superior of the religious house of the Congregation of Marian Fathers in Licheń Stary.
The Easter Triduum is the summit of the entire liturgical year. The Collect of yesterday's Eucharist explains that "we are commemorating the Most Holy Supper in which your only-begotten Son, about to give himself up to death, has left to the Church a new eternal Sacrifice and a Feast of his love." During the liturgy during the hymn "Glory to God in the highest", bells rang loudly in the church. After him, all instruments fell silent. We will hear the organ only during the solemn celebration of the Easter Vigil on Saturday night.
The liturgy of Holy Thursday begins the celebration of the Easter Triduum

At the first Passover, God commanded each family to sacrifice a spotless lamb and eat the roasted flesh together. On the cross, God provided a lamb for us - it is Jesus Christ

“We will ponder the passion, death and resurrection of our Lord. It is a salvation event that should give us strong faith, ”said Fr. Binda in his homily. Referring to the fragments of Holy Scripture read during the mass, he explained the meaning of the Paschal signs: “The blood of the Lamb protected from the Angel of Death. How much more effectively we are protected by the Blood of Christ shed on the Cross! The Jewish Passover did not end with the death of the lamb, but with the consumption of its flesh. Jesus gave bread to the disciples, saying, "This is my body which will be given up for you: do this in remembrance of me!" When we eat His Body in faith and drink His Blood, our faith gives us salvation. Jesus addresses his invitation to us, saying: "Stay here and watch with me". This liturgy invites us to look more intensely at Christ's hands. The hands that were so open at the Last Supper. They are a safe haven. Only sin separates us from them "- said the superior, adding:" Today we thank God for His priest who sits in the confessional and forgives sins with the power of Jesus Christ. "

Holy Thursday is the day on which not only the institution of the Eucharist is remembered, but also the priesthood. “This holy time reminds us of Christ's boundless love for man, for all of us. On this very special day, let us surround priests with fervent prayer that they may faithfully fulfill Christ's call, ”read in the commentary on the liturgy. The commentator also explained the rite of the mandatum, or the washing of the feet. The rite took place after the liturgy of the Word. Twelve men - representatives of various classes of the Church, whose feet were washed by the chairman of the liturgy, symbolize its unity. This sign teaches us to love others as Christ loved us. "Through the sacrament of Baptism, we have all received a part in the priestly mission of Christ," recalled the commentator.

At the end of the Holy Thursday liturgy, the Blessed Sacrament was transferred in a solemn procession to the Altar of Exposition, which was placed in the lower part of the basilica - in the Holy Trinity Chapel. Thanking for the presence of Christ, his sacrifice, love and service to humanity, the faithful had the opportunity to adore until 10 p.m. After the liturgy, the altar was stripped, resembling a stripped-down and complete humiliation of Christ, which calms Good Friday. Eucharist will not be celebrated today or on Holy Saturday.
